This Vegan Orange Butter Icing looks and tastes great with any cake but really adds additional flavour to orange flavoured cakes such as my Vegan Orange Zest Cake.
Really easy to make and flavour and can be easily adjusted to make other flavours such as Vegan Lemon Butter Icing by swapping the orange colouring for yellow and the orange extract for lemon extract.
Please note that not all food colourings are vegan so you will need to check.
However, orange food colouring is readily available on the internet. But if you can’t find a vegan-friendly orange food colouring, you can mix red and yellow together. Some supermarkets do have vegan-friendly red and yellow. But please check before purchasing.
Making this Vegan Orange Butter Icing
Note on sugars – not all sugars are vegan so, if you don’t already have a brand that you use and trust, please check before purchasing.
Place the vegan butter and vegan icing sugar in a bowl.
Then mix the two together.
Next, add the food colouring and the orange extract and mix in.
I have used a ratio of 220g / 8 oz vegan icing sugar to 55 g / 2 oz vegan butter which should be ample to achieve a good, spreadable texture to your icing. However, when my kitchen is really warm I sometimes need to chill the prepared icing for 30-60 minutes before using it. This is because the butter in the icing makes the icing too soft because it has become soft whilst mixing.
If this happens when you are making it and you need to use it straight away, you can add more icing sugar to stiffen it. Otherwise, chill for a while and the butter in it will regain its texture. You should be able to form soft peaks.
There have been vegan-friendly kinds of margarine available in the supermarkets for years now that are fine for baking etc., but for more information on vegan butter available in the UK have a look at – interneteyes – (thank you Nicholas, for the link).

Vegan Orange Butter Icing

- 220g / 8 oz vegan icing sugar
- 55 g / 2 oz vegan butter
- 2.5 ml / ½ teaspoon orange extract
- 1.25 ml / ¼ teaspoon orange food colouring
- Step 1
- Place the icing sugar and butter in a bowl and mix together. Add the orange extract and orange food colouring and mix together.
- Step 2
- If necessary, place in the fridge for 30 minutes (see notes above).
- Step 3
- Use to decorate the cake/s of your choice or my vegan orange zest cake.
